MISC:New Caledonia is the largest island in Grand Terre. Its
dependencies are: Loyalty Islands, Isle of Pines, Huon Islands, and
Chesterfield Islands. It is one of the world's largest nickel
producers; nearly 35% of the world's supply is deposited along the
backbone of New Caledonia. The climate is tropical; modified by
southeast trade winds; hot, humid, and subject to typhoons from
November to March. There is a negligible amount of arable soil.
